Many people aren’t entirely sure about getting dental implants because they “just take too long.” You usually have to wait for a minimum of 10 weeks between the extraction and the implant surgery and then another four to six months to have that implant restored with a dental crown or bridge.
However, at Hill Country Oral Surgery in Austin, TX, we are delighted to introduce an option that can make you save some time. We offer those patients who don’t want to wait that long the “Teeth in a Day” treatment. With this procedure, you will have the extraction of the tooth and the implant placement on the very same day.
Teeth in a Day
“Teeth in a Day” is a complex dental procedure in which you get the dental implant (or implants) the same day as the extraction of the damaged teeth. It saves a lot of time by skipping the healing period after the dental extraction and all the check-ups you need before the implant surgery.
So why can we skip this healing time? Well, in these cases, the implant is placed in the same socket where the tooth used to be, so this treatment takes advantage of the physiological process that follows the extraction to fuse the implant to the jawbone.
What to Expect During this Procedure
The treatment varies from case to case – it’s not the same to have only one missing tooth as to need a full-mouth restoration. However, if you get this procedure, you can expect the following steps:
- Anesthesia: our dentist will numb the area of the surgery to make sure you won’t experience any discomfort during the procedure.
- Tooth extraction: you will have the tooth (or teeth) removed as gently as possible to avoid losing too much of the bone tissue that anchors the tooth. The amount of bone tissue left is crucial to ensure the success of the treatment.
- Implant placement: our dentist will screw the implant into the jawbone in the angle and position that was previously determined in the treatment plan.
- Suture: once the surgery is finished, the wound is closed with stitches.
Am I a Suitable Candidate?
Most patients that are overall healthy and don’t smoke (or are willing to quit before surgery) can choose this treatment. However, it is not advised if you present any of the following situations:
- insufficient jawbone
- periodontal disease
- bruxism
- autoimmune disease
